淋巴水肿（Lymphedema）是指机体某些部位淋巴液回流受阻引起的软组织液在体表反复感染后皮下纤维结缔组织增生，脂肪硬化，若为肢体则增粗，后期皮肤增厚、粗糙、坚韧如象皮，亦称“象皮肿”。尽管它常常是由癌症治疗和寄生虫感染引起的（继发性淋巴水肿），但也有可能由遗传或出生缺陷引起的（原发性淋巴水肿）。
大约20%采用腋下淋巴清除术的乳腺癌患者患有继发性淋巴水肿。致残和毁容风险显著影响患者生活质量。美国有超过15万人被诊断患有乳腺癌相关淋巴水肿，伴随每年约1.8万人的新增病例，欧洲市场也具有相似的患病人群。继发性淋巴水肿目前用压缩衣、特殊按摩和锻炼缓解，但这些方式只能缓解症状而并非针对淋巴系统损伤的病因，不能治愈该疾病。

Gene Therapy for Lymphedema
Lymphedema, is a condition of localized fluid retention and tissue swelling caused by a compromised lymphatic system, which normally returns interstitial fluid to the thoracic duct, then the bloodstream. The condition can be inherited or can be caused by a birth defect, though it is frequently caused by cancer treatments and by parasitic infections.
According to Lymphatic Education & Research Network (LE&RN), in the USA, there are over 150,000 diagnosed cases of breast cancer associated lymphedema with 18,000 diagnosed new cases of breast cancer associated lymphedema each year. Similar numbers of patients are diagnosed in Europe. Though incurable and progressive, a number of treatments can ameliorate symptoms.
